When people say, “I don’t make enough money to invest,” I can’t help but respond, “I bet you can. Let’s look at how we can cut your luxury expenses.”
The truth of the matter is that most of us do have money to save and invest, but that requires lowering our expenses. What to cut? Next to mortgage and car payment, cable can be one of the highest bills you have.
According to Consumer Reports, the average cable bill in 2015 will reach $123/month. That’s almost $1,500 a year! And, if you were to invest that $123/month for 25 years at 8% interest, any guesses to how much you would have saved? 5K? 20K? Nope. $115,000!!! Imagine the buckets you could fill with that money alone! (Don’t know what “buckets” are – download my Signature Money Mapping System from my home page.)
I know most of your jaws have dropped. Either from the revelation of the real cost of our expenses. Or from the mere thought of cutting the cord – oh what will we ever do with our time?
Podcasts = FREE Entertainment
Podcasts are audio programs that are distributed over the Internet and downloaded to your favorite listening device. The beauty of podcasts is that you can listen to them when and where you want; essentially creating a radio station focused entirely on the topics you want to listen to. And better yet, they are commercial free! That’s doubly free in my book and why I simply LOVE them!
The best part: they are FREE!
And you will find podcasts covering almost any topic under the sun. So you can imagine how podcasts help quench my thirst for knowledge.
Feeding my 6 “F words”
One of my favorite things about listening to podcasts is that they serve 5 of my 6 “F words” in one swoop: Faith, Feeling, Fun, Finance and Flourish. I can fuel my mind and my body, while having a hell of a good time doing it.
I often listen to my favorite podcasts while I travel. Long layovers or crowded flights are much more tolerable when I can lose myself in learning something new or listening to a great story. People often wonder what I am listening to when they see my feverish note taking or a slight giggle comes out.
I also make sure I have my earbuds on and my podcasts downloaded while I walk my dog, hop on my stand up paddle board, or go for a run. Podcasts are great for taking care of 2 of my F words at 1 time: increasing my brainpower (flourish) while I get exercise to feel well.
Try this: make yourself a pact to throw on your gym shoes or grab the dog’s leash and download a podcast instead of turning on Pandora or Spotify. The time on the treadmill or walking Fido will go by much quicker when you are absorbed in a great story!

Bulletproof Radio
I have started devouring (pun intended) Dave Asprey’s podcast, as well as his bestselling book, Bulletproof Diet. I love how Dave’s food philosophies encourage you take control of and improve your biochemistry, your body, and your mind so they work in unison. This has become so important to me since becoming sick in 2013.

TED Radio Hour
I love anything TED(x)! The amount and breadth of knowledge from TED(x) speakers is mind blowing. TED Radio Hour is co-produced by NPR and is based on TED(x) Talks. Each show is centered on a common theme – such as the source of happiness, crowd-sourcing innovation, power shifts, or inexplicable connections.

Serial
I may be a little slow to catch onto the Serial bandwagon, but I am glad my team member Rachel kept gushing about it at the office. Pure brain candy (entertainment), Serial tells one story – a true story – over the course of an entire season. This season, host Sarah Koenig dives into the facts behind the 1999 murder of a high school student in Baltimore. If you love mysteries, you will love Serial. We warn you – it will suck you in!
